Back in 2007 I fractured my femur. It was one of the most devastating things that had ever happened to me. I wasn’t in the best state of mind for those first couple of weeks. I had never had an injury bad enough that I needed surgery before, so getting a metal rod inserted in my leg made me feel some type of way.
At that time, I had (and I still have) the fastest 100 meter sprint time in Massachusetts history. I’m also a firefighter and a very active person. The day that I fractured that bone, so many things were running through my head...Will I walk again? Will I be able to run and if so, sprint? Will I be able to work and provide for my family doing the job that I love? At the time, I honestly didn’t know and it was a horrible feeling.
But with help from my family, friends and my brothers and sisters in my firehouse, I was able to remember that I’m a fighter.
I knew I wanted to come back stronger physically and mentally. I was told it would take me six months to get back to work, butI made it back in four. Finding CrossFit® a year later just added more fuel to help me flourish into the person I am today. Fast forward 10+ years and I’m still learning and growing from my family , friends, and my brothers and sisters in the department. I also learn from the members that I coach at my box and the people I meet in my many adventures day to day.
Looking back, I’ve realized that fracturing my femur was a way to slow me down so that I could focus on what and who were important in my life...my little speed bump!
Today I’m stronger physically and mentally, not as fast, but I’m learning to approach each day as a new journey, and I work hard so I can play hard.
